Chester County
Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site
Free, genuinely educational, and one of the better NPS Junior Ranger programs in the region. The living history demonstrations — blacksmithing, charcoal-making, 18th-century iron moulding — give kids something to watch and engage with rather than just reading plaques. 848 acres of grounds to explore after. Best for kids 6+ who can do the Junior Ranger booklet; younger kids will still enjoy the grounds and animals on site.

Hopewell Furnace was an 18th and 19th century iron-making community, and the NPS has preserved and interpreted it as a living history site. The Junior Ranger program is available at the visitor center — kids work through an activity booklet and earn an official badge, which is a reliable way to keep them engaged through the whole visit. Seasonal living history demonstrations bring the ironmaking process to life in ways that genuinely hold a kid's attention. The 848-acre grounds include trails and open farmland that extend the visit naturally. Admission and parking are free.
