Kid-Friendly Trails in Chester County, PA

Updated 2026-05-22 · Kid Friendly Chesco editors

Chester County has an embarrassment of outdoor riches — paved rail trails flat enough for a running stroller, unpaved nature loops good for 3-year-olds who want to feel like they went on a real hike, and county parks with enough room to wear out even the most energetic kid. The two questions that actually matter: is it paved (stroller-friendly), and how far is it from the parking lot to something interesting? We've broken it down by what works for which age.

The list
Chester Valley Trail01Chester County Parks

Exton·outdoor

Chester Valley Trail

Eighteen miles of paved, flat trail means you pick your distance — babies in strollers, toddlers on balance bikes, older kids on their own wheels. The Exton Park section is the best starting point for families: easy parking, bathrooms, and a playground right there if you need to cut it short.

Parking
The Exton Park trailhead off Park Road has a large lot and is the easiest family entry point. The Church Farm Lane trailhead also works but has less amenity. Both are free.
Crowds
Weekend mornings from April through October are popular — expect company but the trail is wide enough that it never feels crowded. Weekday mornings are very quiet. Winter use drops significantly.
Hours
Daily 8a–sunset

French Creek State Park

$$$$

One of the most underused big parks in Chester County. 7,730 acres with 35+ miles of trails, a pool at Hopewell Lake, disc golf, fishing, and a nature center with seasonal programs. The pool admission is $13/person which is hard to beat for a full day outdoors. Download trail maps before you arrive — cell service is unreliable.

Parking
Multiple lots throughout the park. Free to enter the grounds; pool has a separate $13/person admission. Main lot near the visitor center is the best starting point.
Crowds
Far less crowded than Marsh Creek despite being larger. The trails in particular feel genuinely wild — you can go an hour without seeing another person. Pool gets busy on hot summer weekends.
Hours
Grounds open daily 8a–dusk. Pool open Memorial Day–Labor Day, Mon 11a–5:45p, Wed–Fri 11a–5:45p, Sat–Sun 11a–6:45p (closed Tuesdays).

Toddlers, Preschool, Kids, Tweens, Teens
Hibernia County Park03Chester County Parks

Hibernia County Park

Worth the drive to Coatesville if your kids are past the stroller stage — 900+ acres of wooded trails, a playground, fishing pond, and some of the quieter hiking in the county. Trails are unpaved and can be rough, so leave the stroller home. Preschool and up with good shoes.

Parking
Main parking area off Park Road is free and rarely crowded. Multiple trailheads with their own small lots — the main entrance lot near the picnic area is the best starting point for families.
Crowds
Hibernia doesn't get the weekend crush that Marsh Creek does — it's off the beaten path enough that even on nice days you'll have space. One of the more underrated county parks.
Hours
Open daily, dawn to dusk
Good for
Preschool, Kids, Tweens, Teens
Marsh Creek State Park04Pennsylvania DCNR

Downingtown·outdoor

Marsh Creek State Park

One of the best parks in Chester County — 1,700 acres with a big lake, a solid playground, boat and kayak rentals, and more picnic space than you'll ever need. The playground near the main beach area is well-equipped and shaded in spots. Summer weekends get crowded; early morning visits are the move.

Parking
The main beach/boat launch area has a large lot that fills on hot summer weekends — arrive before 10 a.m. or you'll be circling. The east parking lot near the equestrian area is quieter if you're just hiking.
Crowds
Peak summer weekends are busy, especially around the beach. Spring and fall are dramatically calmer and just as beautiful. Weekday mornings are the sweet spot year-round.
Hours
Open daily, 8a–dusk
Good for
Toddlers, Preschool, Kids, Tweens, Teens
Nottingham County Park05Chester County Parks

Nottingham County Park

Three separate playgrounds calibrated for different ages, a duck pond, and hiking through genuinely unusual terrain — the serpentine barrens are unlike anything else in Chester County. Free, uncrowded, and underrated. The toddler playground near the main entrance is well-designed; older kids gravitate to the larger structure.

Parking
Main lot off Park Road is free and typically uncrowded — this park doesn't get the overflow that some others do. Easy access from the parking area to all three playground sections.
Crowds
One of the least crowded county parks we've visited. Weekend afternoons bring families but it never feels packed. The duck pond is the perennial draw for toddlers.
Hours
Daily 8a–dusk
Good for
Toddlers, Preschool, Kids, Tweens, Teens
Stroud Preserve06Tripadvisor / Simone Collins

West Chester·outdoor

Stroud Preserve

Beautiful nature preserve with a mix of open meadow and wooded trails. The 1-mile loop right off the parking lot is the easy family option — mostly flat, meadow views, some shade. Muddy after rain, so check the forecast and bring old shoes. Note it's closed on Wednesdays.

Parking
Free gravel lot off Shavertown Road. Fills up on weekend mornings in spring and fall — arrive by 9 a.m. if you want easy parking. Not a lot of spaces.
Crowds
Popular with birders and dog walkers in the morning. Quiet enough that you'll feel like you actually got outside rather than queuing for nature. Mid-week is the emptiest — but remember Wednesday closures.
Hours
Open daily sunrise to sunset, closed Wednesdays
Good for
Toddlers, Preschool, Kids, Tweens, Teens
Struble Trail07Chester County Parks

Downingtown·outdoor

Struble Trail

A compact, paved trail that runs along Brandywine Creek — genuinely beautiful, flat, and stroller-friendly. The Norwood Road trailhead has easy parking and bathrooms nearby. Short enough that you won't need to negotiate a retreat, long enough to feel like a real outing.

Parking
The Norwood Road parking area is the easiest with kids — right off the main road, free, and close to the trail entrance. Don't confuse it with the trailhead further east, which has a smaller lot.
Crowds
Popular on weekend mornings but the trail isn't long enough to feel congested. Dog walkers and joggers are the main company. Very quiet on weekday mornings.
Hours
Open daily, sunrise to sunset
Good for
Babies, Toddlers, Preschool, Kids, Tweens
