Marsh Creek State Park
One of the best parks in Chester County — 1,784 acres with a big lake, a solid playground, boat and kayak rentals, and more picnic space than you'll ever need. The playground near the main day-use area is well-equipped and shaded in spots. Summer weekends get crowded; early morning visits are the move.

Marsh Creek State Park is the kind of place you can spend a full day without running out of things to do. The lake is the centerpiece — boat and kayak rentals, fishing off the bank, and lakeside views. The playground near the main area is good for all ages, and the picnic pavilions (reservable or first-come) are spacious. For older kids there are hiking trails circling the lake. For very young kids, the picnic and playground combo alone justifies the trip. A Chester County summer essential.
Know before you go
Restrooms at the park are seasonal — one visitor found them closed on an early-April visit, with a portable toilet available near the boat rental lot as backup. More than 150 picnic tables are spread across the park's picnic areas, and parking is free throughout. Bring your own charcoal for the grills.
Swimming is prohibited in Marsh Creek Lake. Swimming is available at the separate, fee-based seasonal pool; check the pool schedule before planning a swim. Park hours and swimming rules checked against Pennsylvania DCNR on September 15, 2026.

- The boat launch area has a large lot that fills on hot summer weekends — arrive before 10 a.m. or you'll be circling. The east parking lot near the equestrian area is quieter if you're just hiking.

- Peak summer weekends are busy, especially around the lake and pool. Spring and fall are dramatically calmer and just as beautiful. Weekday mornings are the sweet spot year-round.
